Lactobacillus Acidophilus (Neo-Latin 'acid-loving milk-bacillus') is a rod-shaped, Gram-positive, homofermentative, anaerobic microbe first isolated from infant feces in the year 1900. The species is commonly found in humans, specifically the gastrointestinal tract & oral cavity as well as some speciality fermented food such as fermented milk or yogurt, though it is not the most common species for this. The species most readily grow at low pH level (below 5.0) & has an optimum growth temperature of 37 °C. Certain strain of L. acidophilus show strong probiotic effect & are commercially used in dairy production. The genome of L. acidophilus has been sequenced L. acidophilus has antagonistic effect on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium & Clostridium perfringens. Out of the four organisms, Staphylococcus aureus is the most affected. Along with S. aureus, the other Gram-positive bacteria, C. perfringens, was affected more by L. acidophilus, than the two other bacteria that are Gram-negative. L. acidophilus is found to also reduce oral plaque formation by Streptococcus mutans it is written in the Holy King James Bible the revelation of saint John the Jewish apostle 50 AD Anno Domini in the year of our Lord Jesus Christ Revelation 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, & on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruit, & yielded her fruit every month: & the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. amen & amen “Let food be thy medicine, & let medicine be thy food.” Hippocrates 460BC Let supplements be thy medicine & let medicine be thy supplement Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) is a well-studied species of beneficial lactic acid bacteria which naturally inhabit the human digestive tract, oral cavity & urogenital system. It play an essential role in maintaining microbial balance & protecting against opportunistic pathogens. Key Health Benefit & Mechanism

1. Digestive Health & Lactose Digestion Lactose Breakdown: L. acidophilus produce high level of the enzyme beta-galactosidase (lactase), which hydrolyze lactose into glucose & galactose, directly alleviating gas, bloating & cramps in lactose-intolerant individuals. Diarrhea Prevention & Relief: Clinical evidence show it reduce the risk & duration of infectious & antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) by stabilizing commensal gut microflora.

2. Pathogen Inhibition & Organic Acid Production Lactic Acid Synthesis: As a homofermentative bacterium, it convert hexose sugar into L+lactic acid, creating an acidic microenvironment (pH } 3.5–4.5) which inhibit pathogenic bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, & Clostridioides difficile.

Bacteriocins & Antimicrobials: Produce targeted natural antimicrobial peptides—such as acidocin & lactacin B—which disrupt the cell membrane of harmful microorganisms.

3. Vaginal & Urogenital Support Microbiome Dominance: In the female urogenital tract, L. acidophilus produce lactic acid & hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), maintaining a low pH that prevent overgrowth of Gardnerella vaginalis (bacterial vaginosis) & Candida albicans (yeast infection).

4. Intestinal Barrier Integrity & Immune Modulation Competitive Exclusion: Bind directly to intestinal epithelial cells using specialized surface-layer (S-layer) protein, preventing pathogen from attaching to mucosal wall.

Immune Signaling: Interact with gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) to stimulate Secretory IgA (sIgA) production thus balance inflammatory cytokines. Strain-Specific Application

L. acidophilus NCFM Reduce abdominal pain & bloating; upregulate opioid receptors (MOR) in the gut.

L. acidophilus LA-5 Synergize with B. lactis BB-12 to restore commensal microflora following antibiotic therapy.
