Papa Doc dictator caricature François Duvalier 14 April 1907 – 21 April 1971 also known as Papa Doc, was a Haitian politician and Vodouisant who served as the president of Haiti from 1957 until his death in 1971. He was elected president in the 1957 general election on a populist and black nationalist platform. After thwarting a military coup d'état in 1958, his regime rapidly became more autocratic and despotic. An undercover government death squad, the Tonton Macoute (Haitian Creole: Tonton Makout), indiscriminately tortured or killed Duvalier's opponents; the Tonton Macoute was thought to be so pervasive that Haitians became highly fearful of expressing any form of dissent, even in private. Duvalier further sought to solidify his rule by incorporating elements of Haitian mythology into a personality cult. Duvalier compared himself with Vladimir Lenin, Jesus Christ and Jean-Jacques Dessalines. Prior to his rule, Duvalier graduated from the Graduate School of Public Health of the University of Michigan on a scholarship that was meant to train Black doctors from the Caribbean to take care of African-American servicemen during World War II. He acquired the nickname "Papa Doc". He was unanimously "re-elected" in a 1961 presidential election in which he was the only candidate. Afterwards, he consolidated his power step by step, culminating in 1964 when he declared himself president for life after another sham election, and as a result, he remained in power until his death in 1971. Triglycerides bind to the blood-brain barrier, blocking leptin from crossing over into the brain the mechanism of leptin resistance, how high fructose intake lead to elevated liver triglycerides that physically block leptin from crossing the blood-brain barrier to reach the hypothalamus. Step C: The Hypothalamic Blind Spot Because leptin cannot cross the blood-brain barrier efficiently, the hypothalamus perceive that leptin level are dangerously low. To the brain, low leptin mean the body is in a state of starvation. Even though a person's fat cells are producing massive amount of leptin (hyperleptinemia), the brain cannot "see" it. The brain responds by: Intensely stimulating appetite & cravings (particularly for high-calorie, energy-dense food rich in vitamin & mineral ). Decreasing baseline metabolic rate to conserve energy. 3. The Glucose Faction: Chronic Hyperinsulinemia While fructose drive leptin resistance via liver lipids, the glucose component of sugar attack the system through chronic insulin spike. Insulin-Stimulated Leptin Secretion: In the short term, a spike in insulin after eating glucose actually stimulate fat cells to secrete more leptin, signaling fullness. The Long-Term Failure: When sugar is consumed constantly throughout the day, insulin level remain chronically elevated (hyperinsulinemia). Over time, chronic high insulin overstimulate the adipose tissue, causing it to pump out a constant, unyielding torrent of leptin into the bloodstream. Just like a loud, continuous noise causes you to eventually tune it out, the constant flood of high-amplitude leptin cause the receptors in the hypothalamus to downregulate (become desensitized). These receptors lose their structural sensitivity, requiring more & more leptin to trigger the same "fullness" signal.
